Presidents Report June - Mark Hooker

Updated: Jun 24

President’s Letter

Mark-written by Nancy

Hello Golf Lakers. You are probably wondering why Nancy is writing this month’s letter. Mark has been busy this past month and I told him I would write his letter and give him a break for a month. So, you have me.

Outdoor activities are open once again. We do have some new temporary rules to follow at the pool, but they are not very restrictive. We are always to practice social distancing wherever we are so in the pool will be no problem. Sanitizing whatever we touch is not so bad as we should be doing that at home or wherever we go. Not congregating in groups will not be hard as we have been doing that anyway. I certainly plan to obey as I want these activities to stay open, and if we do not follow the rules, activities will be shut down again.

As of today, May 9, the clubhouse is still closed. No date for reopening has been set. This also means no Saturday morning coffee and donuts and conversation. The staff is also working regular hours in the park and our office. The office windows are closed and will remain that way till further notice. If you need one of the office staff, knock on one of the windows and you will get a response.

We are getting a new compactor for our trash collection. The smell should improve as this one will function better. I for one am happy for that smell to go away!

Our parking lots-both of them-will be repaved this summer. They may not appear to need repaved, but they do. 5th street will also be paved. Paving is a typical summer job. Imagine both these jobs being done while the park is full! What a mess!

We are also continuing the Sanitary Sewer project. While the main lines were done previously, these lines are sub mains and were not done with the previous project. When we ran a camera thru these lines, we found that we had some problems, and these lines were in bad shape and needed relined or replaced. Relining is less expensive and less damage to yards than replacing. We have reserves that are paying for this work. Mark tells me that when we run a camera through other lines, we may find more work to be done. Not surprising as most of these lines are the original ones put in beginning in 1965 when the park was first opened.

Hurricane season begins June 1. Full time residents should begin preparations for evacuation as mobile homes will be under mandatory evacuation orders if we have a storm here. The fire department and local news sources will let us know when to evacuate. You should have your plans and a safe place to go to outside our park in mind before it becomes necessary. The clubhouse will be padlocked shut. If you have questions about this, talk with those in the park who have been here for some time.

Many of our residents have left and made the journey to their Northern homes. Some are regretting that decision because of the weather. Others are delaying due to the restrictions in their Northern state. Our street is quieter but there are still cars that do not obey our speed limit. Our street is not the only one in the park with that problem. Some of the speeding cars are our residents! With the increased foot traffic and bicycles, drivers need to be following the 15 mile per hour speed limit. We urge our residents to slow down and tell your visitors and repair people that our speed limit is 15 miles per hour. Protect the people walking and riding bicycles.

Mark and I are looking forward to the summer. Mark has a honey-do list and I am the supervisor. Have a healthy, active summer and return to Golf Lakes this fall.

Look for some humor in your life. It helps.
